History of the College

St. Finian's College was founded in Navan in 1802 by Bishop Patrick Plunkett to provide a Catholic education for young men from the Diocese of Meath and the surrounding areas. In 1908 the College relocated to Mullingar - the Cathedral town of the diocese. The new school building, modelled on Clonliffe College in Dublin, was built on an extensive site providing a suitable educational environment along with generous recreational facilities. There it continued the long and proud tradition in the field of education which it had established over the years in Navan.
In more recent times the College has been renovated and modernised as part of an ongoing development programme. A new classroom block has been added, together with science laboratories, language, computer and technical graphics rooms. This enables St. Finian's to meet the demands of the new and developing curriculum while retaining its links with the past.

Aims of the College

St. Finian's College seeks to develop the unique potential of each student. With the co-operation of the parents every effort is made to ensure that each pupil can achieve success at his own level of ability.

Religion is an important part of life and every student is encouraged to deepen his faith and to develop for himself a reasoned basis for the practice of that faith. St. Finian's aims at providing well educated Catholics committed to the enrichment of society.

Pupils, Parents, Teachers

Education is an ongoing process where the school complements and extends the work of the home. To this end a close relationship exists in St. Finian's between parents, pupils and teachers. In order to maintain this essential relationship regular parent teacher meetings are held. Each class is assigned a specific teacher who supervises the conduct and academic development of the students and is available to individual pupils at all times. The progress of each student is monitored and reported on four times a year. The Parents' Council works in close liaison with the school authorities.

A career guidance counsellor offers professional help to all the students and works closely with the senior pupils. In addition, a career seminar is held in the College each September where experienced personnel from the world of work offer advice and guidance to senior students in relation to various career options.

Schola Cantorum

In 1970 the Irish Hierarchy chose St. Finian's as the ideal Centre for providing a specialised musical training for boys at second level. Under a scholarship scheme the Irish Bishops fund a number of places in St. Finian's each year for students wishing to study music at an advanced level.

Within the regular College programme, the Schola students study organ, piano, choral music, composition and a woodwind and string instrument. The Schola enjoys excellent facilities within the College, including two pipe organs, several grand pianos, numerous practice rooms and a fully equipped music room.

Code of Discipline

The role of the school as educator is to develop the potential and character of the individual student and this can only be achieved within the context of a disciplined life. In St. Finian's great stress if placed on the care and respect that each student shows his fellow pupils and teachers. Students are encouraged at all times to be truthful, honest and responsible.

With the full support of our parents a very high standard of discipline is expected and maintained. However the College reserves to itself the right to suspend or remove any student whose conduct and example id in serious or persistent breach of the College rules.

Where difficulties arise, parents are consulted and kept fully informed by the authorities. In all official negotiations with the College, the student must be represented by his parents.

The College decides what is becoming in dress and appearance.

Each student is obliged to renew his application for enrolment before the beginning of each school year. This application will be accepted only if the student's conduct and application to study have been satisfactory during the previous year.

Recreation

Mindful of the important role that leisure now plays in the wider formation of the student the College provides a wide range of recreational facilities. Both team games and individual hobbies are catered for. The College seeks to enrich the cultural life of its students by way of concerts, debates, quizzes and educational tours.

Hobbies

Students are encouraged to pursue individual hobbies. Facilities are provided for chess, snooker, pool, computers and reading. A well stocked library and T.V./Cinema room are at the students' disposal.

A spacious gymnasium for Basketball, Indoor Soccer and Table Tennis.
